ZJU-Yale Cooperative Education Program

Introduction: According to the A COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM AGREEMENT BETWEEN ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY ON BEHALF OF ITS COLLEGE OF LIFE SCIENCES AND YALE UNIVERSITY ON BEHALF OF ITS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH, Yale and ZJU agree to work together to establish the Program  students will receive a BS degree from ZJU and a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from Yale. 

        The Program will entail five (5) years of instruction, as follows: 

  1. The first three academic years will take place at ZJU (including potential study abroad opportunities that are part of the regular ZJU curriculum).

  2. The fourth and fifth years will take place at Yale’s School of Public Health.

  3. After the successful completion of all ZJU requirements (including all the requirements for course credits and graduation thesis), at the end of their fourth academic year, students will receive a BS degree from ZJU and after successful completion of all requirements at Yale at the end of their fifth academic year, the students will receive a MPH from Yale. 


        ZJU students wishing to apply to the Program shall do so subject to meeting the entrance requirements outlined below, and otherwise shall not be entitled to consideration for admission.  Each school will admit students according to its own criteria for admission, and neither school will be involved in determining the criteria used by the other school to select students into its respective degree program.

        ZJU students wishing to apply to the Program will become eligible to do so in the third year of their academic program at ZJU.  Applicants must be in the top of their student cohort (e.g., the third year class of which they are a member).

        ZJU students may apply to the Program before December 15 of the third year of their academic program at ZJU.  Students must notify the registrar at ZJU of their intent to apply to the Program. A committee at ZJU will pre-select at most 20 of the most qualified applicants and notify Yale of the intent of those students to apply.

        Students selected by ZJU will submit applications through the U.S. SOPHAS system for admission to Yale. Students may apply for a concentration in Biostatistics (BIS), Chronic Disease Epidemiology (CDE), Environmental Health Sciences (EHS), Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (EMD), Health Care Management (HCM), Health Policy (HPM), or Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS).

        For those ZJU applicants selected for interviews by Yale, interviews will take place in early January and will be conducted by telephone or Skype. 

        All ZJU applicants will be notified by Yale of the decision on their application (to admit or decline) in February.

        ZJU students admitted to the Program will spend the entire fourth and fifth year of the Program in residence at Yale School of Public Health taking prescribed classes.  A total of 20 course units are required for the Yale MPH degree.

        ZJU students admitted to the Program will be permitted by ZJU to complete their fourth academic year of study towards the ZJU BS degree at Yale. Credits earned for courses successfully completed at Yale will be applied toward students’ ZJU BS degree at the discretion of, and according to the policies and standards established by, ZJU.

        ZJU students admitted to the Program will participate in a public health-related internship during the summer between the end of the fourth academic year and the commencement of the fifth academic year.  The internship must be approved by the Yale School of Public Health Office of Public Health Practice.

        At ZJU the fees for years 1 through 3 will be the same as those for students of the same majors at ZJU. No extra fees will be charged from students who will take part in this Program.

        Each Party will determine its own curriculum of study. Each Party will apply its own grading system to the students in the Program. Each Party will maintain separate records of grades and transcripts according to its own institutional policy and will issue its transcripts separately.  Both Parties acknowledge and agree that any records provided under this Agreement must be in compliance with all applicable privacy laws. 

        Students in the Program will be required to comply with the rules and regulations of Yale during years 4 and 5 of the Program when they are enrolled in the MPH program at Yale.  Any breach of Yale’s rules, regulations or policies will be dealt with according to Yale’s established policies and procedures, Students in the Program will be required to comply with the rules and regulations of ZJU during years 1 through 3 of the Program when they are in residence at ZJU.  Any breach of ZJU’s rules, regulations or policies will be dealt with during these years in accordance with ZJU’s established policies and procedures.

Tuition and Fees:  Expenses

  1. When enrolled at Yale during years 4 and 5 of the Program, students will pay full tuition and fees at the rate set by Yale and must purchase the medical insurance required by Yale.   All personal and living expenses while at Yale will be the personal responsibility of the student.  When enrolled at ZJU during years 1 through 3 of the Program, students will pay full tuition to ZJU at the rate set by ZJU.

  2. Yale will provide to students in the Program the same visa assistance it makes available to all international students enrolled in Yale programs through the Yale Office of International Students and Scholars.
