Key Laboratory of Biosystem Homeostasis and Protection of Ministry of Education is established in August of 2000, approved by the Ministry of Education.

The mission of the MOE laboratory is to conduct original and frontier research in life sciences that benefit human life and its environment. The lab focuses its research on a broad area of biological sciences, including molecular ecology & evolution, conservation genetics, reproductive biology, developmental biology, and molecular cellular biology related human health. In the past nearly 20 years, the laboratory has made remarkable progress on not only the molecular ecology and conservation genetics, which solves the problem of long-term preservation and reproduction of endangered wildlife, but also molecular understanding of cell homeostasis, vertebrate development, regeneration and human diseases.

The lab has selected principal investigators from multiple research units within the university. It particularly combines the rich research resources and core facilities from both Life Sciences Institute and College of Life Sciences. The lab has completed the gene database of almost 50 endangered wildlife including the panda, crested ibis, south-Chinese tiger, and Tibetan antelope. This forms the basis of the State Conservation Center for Gene Resources of Endangered Wildlife, which was approved by the State Forestry Bureau and the Ministry of Education. The lab also has several chemical libraries, cDNA and gene editing libraries for drug discovery and disease therapy. In addition, the lab has a state-of-the-art infrastructure with a large number of modern molecular and imaging instrument (including 2nd generation sequencer, mass spectrometer, super resolution microscopes).

The lab aims to become an international powerhouse in biological research and contributes to the growing international reputation of Zhejiang University.
